Kate plans needed to include a retaining wall on the west side to retain the earth in the garden of another property. This expensive but necessary addition was to build a concrete block wall, which was then rendered. To soften the look of the wall and fencing, Kate planted many herbs, plants and flowers to create a naturalistic effect.

Like you walk away from the house, the lower level of the garden is revealed. Steps on each side of the bed of flowers leads to a second lawn, with apple, pear and cherry trees. A wooden platform creates the perfect sun trap, complete with sun loungers. "I wanted to create a destination halfway point of the garden," said Kate, 'a quiet secret area with a water feature. The mouthpiece of the oblong water can be seen near the top of the wall.

originally, the designs included among a growing orchard meadow with mowed a path in the middle, but the owners found too high maintenance. 'Meadows go through different phases and they can look patchy - most of the ones you see are very old, Kate said. Ultimately, the decision was taken on the grass of the orchard instead.
