"the couple who own the garden much wanted to be a vegetable garden, rather than looking like a housing estate," says Sue.
"We agreed that it would include vegetables, soft fruit trees, herbs and cut flowers, and it would be interesting to walk around and sit while being practice "

hilly location of the garden means that " is extremely exposed to the elements. As such, tender plants, including two trees of the bay at the entrance of the greenhouse and a couple of citrus trees (no shot), are planted in pots, so they can easily be taken inside during the winter months.
"The greenhouse was really starting vegetables from seed and bring them on before planting out," says Sue. "But it's also a nice place to sit with a cup of tea.
Inside the 8m x 4m greenhouse owners cultivate edible, including tomatoes (visible in this image) and cucumbers, as well as black and white vines and a fig tree, which are planted in raised beds around the edge. 'The figures would never ripen out here, "says Sue,' and vineyard and fruit would develop easily. It is very severe in winter and the wind whips through.
The greenhouse also features benches stuffing inside and outside cold frames, in which the owners grow fruits and vegetables, including melons and zucchini.

view of the greenhouse through the grass beds is uninterrupted greenery. Again, because of the location, Sue herbs planted outside had to be robust. She chose rosemary, several types of thyme, sage and oregano in the four beds in the parterre. "These are very difficult herbs, and being those used in many dishes, said Sue, 'and owners love to cook.
The couple also want to make jam and honey, and have their own bees, which are attracted to herbs. Oregano and thyme absolutely swarm of bees when they are in bloom, "says Sue.
Bee friendliness was also part of the memory, even if the production of honey is a small scale operation. "There was enough for me to have a number of honeypots their beautiful while working on the project," laughs Sue. "One of the advantages of working!"

Sue added red fruit cages in this part of the garden (visible with sharp peaks in this photo). These are used to grow strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. More fruit-culture is underway in the beds in the foreground, too - they are StepOver apples, which are formed on the son coming on a rod and grow low on both sides.
'You remove all side shoots,' says Sue, 'and if you do not get apples, the ones you do get really fat. Trees are as beautiful as a border of a garden, as in the spring, you get a beautiful flower, and fall the beautiful fruit.
It is not, Sue admits, a garden for beginners. But the owners are really convenient, "she said, and helped me with all the plantation up and come to the nursery and taking on their pruning advice.
The paths through the design of the floor are made of stone York, and the beds are held in place by top rope Victorian border.

Sue also added setts granite, since they feature in the layout of the house and she wanted to bring some of the same materials. Moreover, the paving is made of rustic landscaping bricks arranged in a basketweave pattern.
Sue suggested the garden should have a central element of some kind and the owners have chosen a sundial. Sue put in an armillary design, because it is more ornamental than other sundials. "It was set up to tell the time, of course, Sue said, 'but it looks beautiful, too.
It was important that the garden looked pretty in addition to being functional, so there are many flowers, too. In this image, the pink flowers are phlox and purple are Erigeron 'Darkest of All'. In the left corner are the peas, while the dispersion of white flowers cosmos, annual from seed. Also visible are the large fronds of fennel plant, part of the herb garden. "It is another fairly hardy plant, adds Sue.

Poles against the stone wall - which was rebuilt when the garden was redesigned - are for fruit trees espalier. Nepeta (catnip), a blue flower that also attracts bees, growing in raised beds made from stone. "I think Nepeta is harder than lavender - I used because it falls on the edges of raised beds.

"dry stone walls. help create a bit of a microclimate in the garden, "says Sue. "Traditionally, many gardens were walled to provide shelter - and here it is sufficient to allow the fruit trees in espalier, which include cherry, mature."

Plan to Sue for the garden, with diamonds of the door clearly on the drawing paths that crisscross each other's garden.
'with blank canvas, it can be difficult to identify the design on something, Sue said, "so that the door was a nice starting point for the design. There was also outings and existing entries, and the plot had an angle on one side, I tried to box a little. T here was also a bulge in one of the walls [visible at the bottom of the plan] which we rebuilt around the existing oak tree. "
the gazebo in the drawings is designed to be a later since having the dry stone walls rebuilt ate in a significant amount of the budget required for this.
