Ask a garden designer: What to do in the garden in June - Your borders fill quickly, the roses are in bloom, the trees begin to bear berries and insects are busy gathering nectar. June is a busy time in the garden, and the longer days and warmer weather make it a wonderful time to be outdoors - especially as now you can start to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Tend to Your Peas
Lathyrus odoratus (annual sweet peas) is one of the most popular summer cut flowers, and delicate fragrance is intoxicating.
Now is the time to pinch the side shoots and tendrils removed when the plants are about four inches high. This will give you longer stems so you can cut them and bring them into the house for a summer magnificent display.
Sweet peas come in a range of colors, deep magentas very dark purples, and are a must, even if you only have a small terrace. They are easily grown from seeds or plug plants in the garden center. Just give them a good organic material worked into the ground and a support to mount, as an obelisk or wigwam. And remember to feed weekly with a liquid rich potash solution.

Encourage the life of the pond
ponds are full of activity in June, and with more sunny days, aquatic plants really start to flourish. Blanket weed can be a pain at the time of the year, but many insects like a little weed cover (tadpoles often nestled themselves in it), so do not be too concerned about having a little of it in a natural pond. If you remove the weeds, use a cane to gently pull (some will break), then leave it on the side of the pond for some time before disposal, to let all the little creatures climb in water .
Look out for some beautiful ponds visitors now including damselflies and dragonflies flashing their iridescent wings.

Mow weekly lawn
Over time more warm, the grass will grow more strongly now, so you'll need to do a weekly cut.
Try to mow in a different pattern each time to make the grass grow all in the same direction. You can also feed your lawn now with liquid fertilizer if it is looking a bit tired. Do not forget to cut the edges, too - it really makes a difference and can make the garden look cleaner immediately.
If you have a newly laid lawn, do not let it dry :. Once she fell and grass edges curl, it is very difficult to get it back the way it was first examined

composting
There's so much growth in the garden at this time of the year, with weekly lawn clippings, there are many material to be composted. Ideally, you need to have equal amounts of grass clippings, prunings from shrubs and woody cuttings and flower heads for nitrogen and carbon rich right mix
Keep the compost moist -. Covered with an old piece of carpet - and turn every week, and you should have the beginning of a great compost in 10 weeks time. It will save you bear bags than the garden center - and it's free!
Beware slowworms inside compost bins - last year, I am such a shock when my compost was living with three of these creatures like snakes. I lifted the carpet and almost fell on my rake!

Deadhead roses
regular task throughout the summer hours deadhead, and in June, the roses are usually at their peak. Remove faded flowers that have them snapping just below the head, and you encourage more flowers to appear.
Other plants can benefit from deadheading, too, or a light chop with scissors to promote new flowers later in the summer; this will prevent the energy of the plant to go into seed production. Hardy geraniums and nepeta can be cut back hard enough with scissors and will soon shoot again. You can also carefully remove dead flowers of rhododendrons now with your fingers, pinching from center; you will see the small new leaf buds are just behind, so it needs a delicate touch.

Harvest your own herb
If you're like me and love to cook using fresh herbs, or just as the plant between other perennials (fennel bronze makes a wonderful contrast with allium, for example, lovage and angelica and which are. both quite large, beautiful eyes among other perennials), so why not make a small herb garden as a project of weekend
You can grow herbs in pots, planters, flower beds - even in old crates and wooden pallets. Never push mint with other herbs or it will take over and run around. And self-seed chives, so you may need to thin them to keep them under control. Thyme likes good drainage, like sage and rosemary, so work a little grain in the ground.
By cutting your grass regularly and use them in your kitchen, you will have healthier and more bushy plants that smell wonderful.

Create a fireside
Enjoy all the color and fragrance in the garden now creating a seating area you can enjoy being outside. This does not mean a patio dining set - you can make indoor furniture outside and building a small room with jets, small tables and cushions.
Place a bench against a sunny wall with scented climbers, or under a pergola covered with a drop of the vine creates a nice seating area for relaxing with friends. What's more enjoyable!

do not let 'drop in June' faze you
It can be worrying when tiny apples or other fruits fall from your trees in early summer after the beautiful spring flower.
This is commonly called the "June drop" and it is a natural outpouring of berries which leads to a greater culture, especially where the apples are concerned. In fact, apples are large fruit and trees can not withstand the amount of fruit produced on each branch. It is the natural defense mechanism of a tree as too great culture will strain the tree's resources. In fact, it is said that only bloom in 20 is necessary for a good harvest on a fully blossoming apple tree.

Enjoy your peonies
peonies must be one of the best big blowsy flowers blooming in borders and as cut flowers at home - and if you have them in your garden, they will be. flower around now
There are two main varieties of peony: the shaft ( Paeonia suffruticosa ) and herbaceous ( Paeonia lactiflora ). The herbaceous peony will die along the ground in the fall of each year, and the variety of the tree loses its leaves in winter while the woody stems remain.
Many people fear that peonies are difficult to grow, but as long as you plant them properly, they will continue to flourish for 50 years or more. For herbaceous varieties, choose a sunny spot in fertile, well drained (the crown will rot if too wet). Plant them therefore the greatest bud is two inches below the ground level. Do not plant peonies too deep as this can prevent flowering. water well and you should have beautiful large flowers after the first two years.

Nurture berries
Strawberries should produce many runners now, you can delete or peg in the ground with wire hooks until they root and grow new plants.
It is a good idea to give your liquid food strawberry plants with high potash every seven to 14 days, and as the young fruits develop, put some straw underneath to prevent rot when they come in contact with moist soil. You can also their net to deter birds.
People often tell me that their strawberries do not taste as good as they used to, or are not as big as in the past, and this is because the plants are past their best. For good fruit, you really need to replace the plants every three years.
Other fruits in the garden should be well watered and helped with good organic mulch, which will retain moisture in the roots and reduce weed growth. Beware of gray mold and remove any rotten fruit to stop the spread to other plants or fruit.
