Tropicalized your small space
Jungle gardens can be created, even in small urban gardens back with the right choice of plants. You can grow a lot of them in pots, which adds height and interest, and makes them easier to do if the weather gets too cold, like some varieties.
The beauty of many jungle gardens style is that you can mix and match plants that might not develop normally together. In this image, there are some South African agapanthus blue, that work well with the large leaves of the banana, view on the right, and bamboo at the back.
Also in a small space, if you are lucky enough to have walls you can paint in bold colors to add drama. This will also help to accentuate most plants, especially those different flowers like lily ginger, dahlias, cannas and lobelia.

Protect tender plants
Dicksonia Antarctica - Australian fern tree - add a touch of drama to exotic garden, but it requires some winter protection. If you live in an area that is not prone to heavy frosts, you can get away with placing a layer of leaves on top of the crown. Otherwise, wrap the wreath with straw and the polar ice and the factory will be fine because they can survive outdoors in this country up to -10ºC.
fern trees prefer a rich humus, neutral to acid soil, and will grow in part to full shade. They are slow growing, can be expensive to buy and are often sold without leaves leaves, but they will soon grow back. The trunk of the fern is essentially the root, which is how the plant takes its food and water, so they must be kept moist; spray the crown and stem during the summer months when the weather is very hot.

create a tropical canopy
a good way to get the feeling of being in the jungle and a tropical canopy is creating winding paths through the dense planting. This is also perfect for those who do not like the prospect of endless hours of mowing a lawn! By creating a tropical style garden with paths cross, you can turn any back garden in a play or a South Pacific paradise.
tropical style gardens are not formal spaces, maintained or heavily pruned, so choose a material for the road that is also informal. Try large pebbles or pieces of random size stone. gravel paths can work well, too, but stay away from the polished appearance.
If you want to walk under the trees, choose the palm evergreen Trachycarpus fortunei , which has a large, leaf-shaped fan and also makes a good focal point in a garden. It works well with Cordyline and musa, commonly known as the banana plant, which is another good-tropical look, broadleaf plant.

Capitalize on containers
If you have limited space or on a roof terrace or a small patio, you can still get a tropical atmosphere by using containers. Choose different sizes planters so some will accommodate larger or larger leaved plants. By placing large containers side by side, as here, you get the feeling that you are surrounded by jungle. rustic seating adds to the tropical feel, as do candles and lanterns at night.
You can also use the succulent plants in a jungle-style garden, as shown in the wooden trough on the table. However, these fleshy plants will need winter protection. If you have planted them in pots, simply put them in a greenhouse, making sure they have good light and are kept cool. If you do not have access to a greenhouse, they will be fine in a south-facing window in your home, but make sure they are not above a hot radiator.
Succulents should be kept on the dry side in winter - they probably only need watering every two weeks. Make sure you do not water the plant itself, as this will make it go mushy, but around the base near the ground.

Try a gunnera - just choose your size
A good plant for an instant tropical effect is the giant doors Gunnera manicata pictured here. When he grows up, you can walk under the large leaves as they act like giant umbrellas. For smaller spaces, use the Gunnera tinctoria . Both varieties can withstand temperatures as low as -20 ° C.

Think beyond the obvious
Verbena bonariensis , the highest plant photo here, is perhaps not the one you consider for a jungle-style garden. Still, it can work well in a tropical setting if it is planted mass and allowed to weave its delicate branches of small purple flowers cluster from plants with smooth leaves. Plants companions for vervain include cannas, bananas, ginger lilies and dahlias same. Verbena also provide much needed nectar for bees, and it looks good around water, too
Talking Ginger lily -. Or Hedychium - it's pretty rustic despite very tropical air in a UK garden and has large glossy leaves. There are different varieties, such as bright orange H edychium of ensiflorum , creating a vibrant and bold statement against the purple of the verbena.

love a lily
the arum lily hardy - or Zantedeschia aethiopica - can not fail to impress in the tropical garden and grows in moist soil or in the sun or in partial shade. Planted in groups, lilies look great with ferns such as Osmunda regalis . Their brilliant white flowers and lush green leaves really stand out. They look as good side ponds and waterfalls. All parts of the plant are toxic, so be sure to take care when planting or cutting back.
The stark white flower of arum can look striking next to the lush, deep purple leaves Canna 'Australia' or (almost mandatory for any jungle garden) Canna ' Durban , which striped orange and red leaves and large orange flowers.

Add hut
If you have space for a small cabin tropical style - or even a shed, you can disguise - adding a jungle-style building will improve theme. You can buy rolls of reed or bamboo to set a marker on a shed roof, and consider adding the material around pots or window bag to add to the tropical feel.
Try also to include a small surface of the water in your garden. With a pond, you will be able to have water lilies, and small varieties or 'Pygmaea' well in a half roll.

Bring in the bamboo
Often used for screening, bamboo is a plant most people would agree is a key element of a tropical garden. Varieties of tall bamboo with larger leaves and larger rods include gold Phyllostachys Aurea and, for the theater, the black rod Phyllostachys nigra . If you want a bouquet variety of training, which is also good in the shade, use Fargesia varieties; these have smaller leaves and thinner rods.
