Plant heather to encourage bees
Ericas or heather look beautiful in early spring, you can plant these now to encourage bees. Some, like this Erica carnea , will bloom even in the snow. They are easy to grow, good on the slopes and do well in poor soil - , they grow best in acidic soil with good drainage. Plant in large groups for best viewing.

Embrace Sweet- feeling Hamamelis
Some plants are actually at their best in January, and Hamamelis is one of those - its fragrant clusters of tiny shrubs flowers are a beautiful addition to the winter garden.
There are many different varieties, so you can choose something light yellow as Hamamelis Mollis, to deep orange, like my favorite Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena'. Do not plant too deep because they can be prone to suction cup and turn into more plants you want.
You can cut the stems of Hamamelis and bring them inside to put in a vase, where the flowers look and smell wonderful.

get birds working with you
Check your fruit trees now, and take steps to protect against the bird damage. Birds are a wonderful ally in the garden to get rid of parasites, but do you feed them at this time of the year if you want them to leave your precious fruit trees alone! Recharge your bird feeders with nuts and seeds during the cold winter months.

make use of your old Christmas tree
Why not make use of your Christmas tree in the garden rather than throw it away? Hire a shredder if you do not have a - or use one provided by your council if it offers this service.
When crushed, use as mulch around the plants. This will help retain moisture and suppress weeds. It works especially well around blueberry plants that love acidic pine needles.
You can also add some of the shredded tree to your compost bin -. But beware not to add too much because the waxy needles take longer to break down than other garden waste

Protect your fruit gel
January is the perfect time of year to observe where the gel packs installed in your garden. If you want to have a good crop of fruit, you have to plant trees away from areas that can be frosted and affect spring flowers. This means it is important not to plant them in the lower parts of the garden, where the cold air, which is heavier than warm air, always finding the lowest level and cause a frost pocket. Take time to notice where the gel remains the longest in the garden, so you can avoid planting trees tender fruit or plants here.

Check houseplants
Many of us have been given beautiful orchids and other indoor plants for Christmas and they can be prone to get aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies or mealybugs. Aphids produce a sticky honeydew rather unpleasant and this in turn will encourage sooty mold.
Block this by checking and taking early action. Do not place houseplants near windows, because they prefer filtered light and a temperature of about 10 ° C. Reduce watering and feeding now, too.

Sow sweet peas now
sweet peas can be sown now, and if you have all you seed in the fall, you can pot now. Make sure you put the pots on a window or in a conservatory. You can put them on the outside, but only in a cold frame.
You will need to pinch the growing point after the first two pairs of leaves have fully opened. Keep the pots moist, but do not over water.

expose those beautiful flower heads
If you Hellebores, c ut old sheets now to help the flowers become visible in the spring. Reducing this time of year will help pollination, insects will be able to get the flowers. It is also a good idea to do this because Hellebores often hide the stain of fungal disease leaves that can look unsightly.
Do not be too heavy, as you can destroy the flower stem. G ently lift the sheet and follow it to the base.
