Ask a garden designer: What do I do in the garden in November - As the temperature drops and the nights draw in, the garden begins to hibernate in November, but still has much to offer . Apart from doing a good tidy garden, cleaning tools, order seeds and general maintenance, you can plant trees, cover, shrubs, bulbs, roses and winter vegetables. Fall colors are beautiful, soft yellow with bright orange, red and deep purple. A walk through the woods or deciduous arboretum is so uplifting and there is still much to enjoy the outdoors. Here are some key elements to consider for your garden this month.

Do not cut back too soon
Tidy beds and clear old stems and foliage, but some plants, such as Sedum and grasses such as Miscanthus look beautiful when left to catch the early frosts.
You can reduce the perennials and divide congested clumps, but leave about 15cm of the old growth to protect the crown of the less hardy plants and prevent winter damage. Phlomis and Echinacea can be left, too, like the seed heads are very loved by goldfinches.

roses plants
November is the best time to plant bare root roses, which are less expensive than container grown and establish much better. Prepare the soil depth first, work in plenty of organic matter.
Never let the roots dry out - when they arrive in the post, pop in a bucket of water for a few hours and put into the ground as soon as you can. Plant them deep enough for the transplant is about 5 cm under the ground. Firm and work the soil around the roots. Mulch on top with manure or compost.

Making the most of dead leaves
leaves fall from the trees around the garden and the temptation is to pick them up and burn them. You do not want soggy leaves on the lawn or borders, but if you overwhelm them in a pile (do not add evergreen) and make a chicken-wire frame container for them, they will rot to do a great mulch and save you a fortune came from spring to improve soil structure.

Enjoy the snow
If the snow comes, do not worry too much damage, as it acts as a natural duvet, keeping the plants warm underneath. Frost does more harm because it causes the water in the plant cells to freeze, damaging the cell wall. Embrace the bare bones of the garden -. formal coverage looks wonderful under a blanket of snow, as does an architectural feature you can have

Keep outdoor pots protected
the roots of plants in pots can be damaged by frost, so if they are too big to inside, using bubble wrap around them, or hessian, which is a bit more attractive. Gather pots together to give mutual protection, and place near a wall away from sharp winds. Make sure your terracotta pots are proof really freezing, as many will not be marked if they are frost resistant.

Embrace bare stems
Some plants really come into their own at this time of the year and are magical even in deep snow. Remember, the snow will not do the same damage as the gel because it is a natural insulator, so remove snow if it breaks branches or becomes too heavy
tree Cornus -. Or dogwoods, as they are commonly called - have bright-colored stems, bright green with red and orange fire. 'Midwinter Fire' is almost electric in color and planted in groups, sounds wonderful, especially around a pond. Make sure you cut them back hard in March for about 8cm from the base and give them a good mulch for interest of the winter rod.

Plant the bulbs for spring color
After the long dark days of winter, nothing more exhilarating to see young fresh shoots and flowers bloom across the bare ground. November is the best time for planting tulips to prevent them from being infected by the fungal disease. They flower best in the sunniest sites, but there are so many varieties to choose from there are types for all positions. If you have heavy clay, dig in some coarse.
Tulips look great in planters, too, and the benefit of pots is that you can move them to areas of the garden lacks color. Try layering different bulbs for longer periods of flowering. Just put your deepest tulips - about two to three times their own depth - then daffodils and crocus or hyacinth grape on top. Add a layer of gravel for tulips at their plantation to stop the bulb rot off.

Take care of your pond
Try cleaning your pool before it is too cold. It is best to get rid of all the dead plants, leaves and algae, as debris may produce gases under the ice that can be toxic to fish. The fish will not need as much power coming winter as they extended semi-sleep. If you were able to net the pond to stop the leaves fall, so it will be useful, but a large pond is difficult to net.
You should remove your pump in winter, but you can give it a good cleaning and raise higher if it is in your pond, not in a room. A hollowed piece of polystyrene to the surface will stop the freezer section.

do not forget your greens
The vegetable garden is not finished yet. The best thing you can do now is to dig out the patch because it allows any rain water to filter through and break up clods, improving the structure and make it easier to grow in the spring. Once done, you can sow a lot of things to enjoy throughout the winter, such as beans and hardy garlic.

Consider hedges and trees
November is a wonderful time to plant trees and hedging plants. The floor still has enough heat into it to enable them to become well established before winter. Many plants are available in root balls wrapped in hessian and should be planted as soon as they can in well-prepared soil.
Remember not plant trees too deeply - rooted branch outwards, not down, and many people now suggest not adding organic material in the hole. Stake firmly to prevent wind damage and the location of your trees carefully, remembering the size they will grow.
