World of design: Home Office 11 Architects around the world - in a series of Houzz international publishers on how our form of life home design worldwide
Home offices are increasingly popular among architects and designers, who prefer to spend less time traveling and more time to be creative. They made a new use of their living rooms, bedrooms and lofts available - and even designed their architecture skills to build extensions to their homes.
The common denominator seems to be that they like to have more control over their time, and most seem to integrate work with life and combine business with pleasure. Let's take a look at how 11 architects worldwide have reinvented their homes in the workplace. Who can you see yourself in?

1. hybrid Office in Spain
Who works here: Victoria Acebo, 46, and Ángel Alonso, 48
Company AceboXalonso Studio
Location: Madrid, Spain
desktop size : 60 to 70 square meters, depending on how other areas of the home are used
Victoria, why do you and Ángel choose to work from home?
We used to spend a lot of time in the office, so when we had our children, we thought it best to combine the two spaces - our home and office - for us spend more time with them.
How have you prepared your space to suit your work style?
We like to see how good spaces adapt over time with such amazing ease according to different circumstances. The room we used as our office was the living room of a house from the early 20th century, and we really have not done much, apart from the upgrade with furniture and objects.
But the truth is that since we started working at home until now, our work area has been a major transformation - from being a home and an office to become the home-office . Now the life and work really complement each other more.

How do you represent it?
represents us in his status as a hybrid space. What we like about this is that it has the dimensions and elegance typical of this type of architecture.
Where do you go to meetings?
We normally have meetings in the office space, but we also want them in our living room and kitchen.
Do you have a work routine?
It is difficult to get a work routine since the diversity of our job makes each day different from the day before. We are architects, publishers, teachers, mother and father. Assemble our agenda is like putting together a puzzle.

How do you keep getting distracted while at home?
The only distraction in this house is our children when they are at home, and in this case we don 't avoid. There are no distractions, because we have a solid infrastructure to solve any daily easy problems.

2. Inner-city Garden Studio Australia
Who works here: Seemann Heidi, 51, and Peter Rush, 50
Company: Seemann Rush Architects
Location: Sydney, Australia
office size: Approximately 15 square meters
Heidi, why did you and Peter choose to work at home
We have a family - two teenagers - and be close and physically available is important. Being an architect is labor intensive, so there are often long hours and working weekends. This allows us to be flexible, to take leave or work long hours if necessary. We also like to keep the car use down and take the bike to go to meetings and site visits. No trip to an office is a bonus for us and for the environment.
When the end of the space rental agreement of shared warehouse in the city was close, the idea of building our own studio in the back of our property developed. We took this on as an architectural challenge to achieve a good work space on a small footprint - a challenge we often encounter working in the city center. The result is a studio with an intensive green roof and solid shutters that open towards the back of the house. Initially, we thought it might be a little too close to home, especially when we have customers around, but our customers love it and it's all good for us.

we have two separate offices, allowing us to work independently. One of us get the good prospects in the garden; we often look lorikeets feed on honeysuckle in the courtyard that separates the studio from home. We have an awning for thermal protection and also to help the reflection of light. Finally, near our home allows me to greet my son when he comes home from school in the afternoon without having to interrupt my work. I do anyway if - just for a brief discussion

we wanted to make the most of a small area and create an interesting space that makes us feel good and has good connection to the garden. Having our studio at home means that we also feel closely connected to our community and the urban environment and architectural challenges of the inner city brings with it. We can bring this first-hand experience in projects near and beyond.

Where do you have meetings with clients?
We often meet clients in their homes we design them, so it makes sense to respond. But we also meetings in the studio - we have additional stools for customers and we are doing everything spacewise work. If the weather is good, we sometimes use the court.
Do you have a work routine?
We. According to our workload, we are in the studio by 8 or 9 hours. site meetings are usually at 7:30 or may be throughout the day. We have lunch when we can, sometimes together, more often; the kitchen is close and we often sit in the garden in the sun. We work up to 19 hours or later, and in turn in the cooking dinner, so we should stop earlier to prepare the family meals.

This is not too hard when you have a lot of work! The question should be: "How do you make sure that you do not work when you should really sit down to talk to your kids or when you need to clean the house!

How have you prepared your space to suit your work style?
Since I wanted to stay in central Tokyo, I could afford a small plot of 92 square meters and had to build a low-cost goods. I even did construction work myself. And once completed it 17 years ago, the building was very simple, because my budget is limited. To save money, exterior walls bare concrete work that the structure while ensuring adequate seismic capacity of 150 percent. But we splurged a bit: the interior walls are covered with teak, but only if necessary. In a sense, the building is still ongoing, and it is great fun to gradually develop the details.
Since the property is in the middle of a dense residential area, the view from the windows could not be great, so I decided to join the whole building with concrete walls and tall to have a small patio to allow light and air come in. Thanks to the walls inside the building is very quiet, so I can focus on my work.

How is it you?
My architectural style is reflected in the building. I often creates concrete structures with wooden details. This building clearly shows my clients that kind of style I have. I believe that creative design can make a good space on a budget.
In addition, my architectural style is a modern house with details of the traditional wooden architecture of Japan. I also understand the integrated wood furniture in the space. For this purpose, always with good quality wood by hand is very important, so I keep some wood materials on the first floor. The price of wood is quite volatile, so I buy it when it is cheaper and save money for my future clients. Further, in the wood dries conditions right and improves its quality. This inspires my architectural ideas much.
Where do you go to meetings?
Fortunately, I am a small meeting room on the first floor.

you have a work routine?
I stay at the office around 8:30 am and finish work at 18.30. I usually take a lunch break of one hour at home, and eat with my staff once a week.
How do you keep getting distracted while at home?
Fortunately, my private space is on the third and fourth floors. Having private spaces and offices on two different floors prevents me from getting distracted. I think being an architect is working 24 hours. I think the architecture all the time, so it is very necessary for me to have my home and office together. Every time I have a new idea, I can run my office! Furthermore, since almost half of my commissioned works are in areas other than Tokyo, I travel very often, so it is very convenient to have a home office.

How have you arranged your space to suit your work style?
my living space is open plan airy and naturally lit, which are important elements for a good work space in my opinion. My house is a multi-functional space that I can use for dinners, as well as office work and modeling. I placed the office under the oriel windows, which are 4m high and cover the third and fourth floors of my building. As such, I feel like I'm looking in the trees, and it remains light throughout the year
How does it represent you
There are no wasted space.; it is not too smart, in the sense that it is quite classic, but it's also fun. It feels generous in proportion and scale with the size of the units on the storage wall. There was a plan at some point to have a built-in desk on the storage wall, but the standalone table works well.

How have you prepared your space to suit your work style?
I organized my studio and furnished in a way that it can be both a meditation room and a recreation and workspace. It is a very bright place; it has two large windows overlooking a green hill and a south facing garden terrace. These two points are very inspiring to me. There is also a space for music and television; a large table, facing the library where I can read my books and magazines, and work area with computers, where I spend most of my time, especially at night.

Most of the time, I go to my clients' studios or meet at the construction site. We also love to meet and talk at lunch, or better yet, in a drink together before dinner.

Have You a work routine?
I do not have a daily routine. I alternate work and other household things to take advantage of every free moment I have. I find it more productive night work, especially in summer, enjoying the fresh air.
How do you keep getting distracted while at home?
For me, it is rather the opposite: I need something to distract me from work. I'm usually too concentrated, and the place that I would love to have a little time for gardening or taking pictures.

Who works here : Heidi Mikalsen, 50
Company : Dreams & Coffee AB
Location : Enkoping, northwest of Stockholm, Sweden
desktop size: 34 sq m
Why are you working from home
I chose to work at home, so I do not have to commute and can stay close to my family . When my children were young, it was great to be able to stay home with them if they were sick and still be able to work. Now when they come home from school, we have a coffee together and talk about our day before I take the job again. In this way, I feel like I'm there for them, but I do not neglect my business - a perfect combination of work and family life. The fact that I designed and built the house myself is as practical as customers who visit have an idea of my style.

you have a work routine?
I work Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 6:00 p.m. and sometimes later. When I'm in a series of creation, I work a lot. That is the disadvantage of working from home: you can work too, because you never leave. I can be a bit of a workaholic at times, but that is more to do with my personality that office location. I tend to forget to take a break, as I love my job so much that I am completely absorbed in it and forget time.

I've never had a problem with focusing on my work - quite the contrary. I always prioritizes the work before tinkering in the house. And if something unforeseen happens, I can just turn off the computer for a while and solve the problem. But this happens very rarely.

Why did you choose to work from home?
In 2012, I decided to build an autonomous studio next to my house. I am able to build on a hill on my property and incorporated in a full-size garage. There were many factors that played by moving my practice of architecture in my house; some of the main ones:
The moment I decided I had small children and thought it would ease the stress of coming home in time to see off the bus. Before moving to my house I am renting an office space in Yarmouth, Maine, which is the next town. It seems close nearby, but the two cities are quite large (square miles), and it took me 25 minutes to get to my office. So another reason to move was to have another hour to add to my working day, since I am now a 10ft trip!
Save the cost of my monthly rent was another added bonus and popping out to the studio after the children had gone to bed to get some overtime because you always work when you're self-employed .

do you have a work routine?
I am a morning person and get the best uninterrupted work done in the early hours. I get up at 5am and fight against e-mails and other work on my laptop in the house before I and the children ready for school. Once my wife or I have at school or breakfast club, I leave the studio to enter my day around 8am. Chris Herlihy, my partner usually gets in around 8:30 ET we basically work back to back to our office until 4:30 to 5pm.
We work a lot throughout the day on multi-jobs we work at once. It is a very comfortable and open space to work with a lot of daylight. Later that evening, I sometimes find myself working on my laptop in the house in front of the TV with my wife do the same.

How have you organized your space according to your style?
I created the studio to be able to accommodate two people to work comfortably and space for meetings at a conference table. There is also a pull-out couch and a hot three-quarters, it can double as a guesthouse when members of the family visit.
This ladder rack and storage took me two years to finally conceive. Until the scale was designed, the net was consulted through a stepladder. I worked with a carpenter friend of mine to come with this unit.
The scale required to be at a comfortable angle up and down on the net, but he could not stay in the room too far because of the sofa. I needed more storage shelves, so I shared the space under the scale in various lockers to house stationery and rolled drawings. I was working with my friend to come up with a drawing that hung rack designs that slide on the drawer slides, like a kitchen drawer.

I was working with my friend to come up with a drawing that hung rack designs that slide on the drawer slides, like a kitchen drawer.
